Helena Karwoska was born to Michalina and Antoni Karwoska in a small town near Mlawa, Poland. She came to the USA aboard the SS Potsdam, arriving at Ellis Island from Rotterdam in Nov. 1906. She was 18 years old. She settled with her mother Michalina and step father, John Hoinski in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY. She met and married Wladyslaw Borkowski in Greenpoint and they married in 1911 at St. Stanislaw Kosta Catholic Church in Greenpoint. They had three children, Vincent John born 1912, Violet born 1913, and John Vincent born in 1917. She was a homemaker after her marriage. She and Grandpa spoke Polish to each other for the almost 70 years of their marriage. I look back with fondness to the years when as a child, I got to visit her and Grandpa. She lived to be 98 years old!
