James "Jim" Dale Smith, 73, a resident of the Buxton community died Wednesday afternoon, April 4, 2012 at the Providence St Vincent Medical Center in Portland.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 11, 2012 at the Buxton Cemetery on Staley Rd. in Buxton.
A celebration of life will follow the graveside service held at Richard Smith's home directions will be given at the graveside service all are welcome.
Jim was born on November 22, 1938 in Lamar, Missouri. He was one of eight children born to William A. and Martha E. (Hartman) Smith. Jim and his family followed the crops throughout the United States. They settled in Oregon in the mid to late 1950's.
He met his future wife, Ellen Smith, while working and they soon began dating and were married on July 7, 1959. Following their marriage they made their home in North Plains until the mid 1960's when they moved to "Top Hill" in Buxton.
Jim was a natural mechanic; he and his brother Richard had leased the Rocket Station in Buxton where they repaired cars trucks and tractors. Jim was also a farmer and grew strawberries on his property. He loved being on the tractor and out in the garden. He enjoyed cooking especially for his family. His favorite car was a 1949 oldsmobile but had owned a wide variety of cars throughout the years. As a young man he liked to build and race cars. He was also a good dancer and enjoyed singing. He could always see the good side to everything and would always lend a hand to strangers. He was a kind hearted person. The strongest man we knew. He was considered our Hero.
He is preceded in death by his parents and four siblings; Georgia Owenby, Alice Schmidlin, Laree Connelly, and Rosie Rice.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Ellen, five children and their spouses; Peggy Estes of Buxton, OR, Willie and Pauline Smith of Banks, OR, Reta Smith of Buxton, OR, Roy Smith of Buxton, OR Leo and Sue Smith of Forest Grove, OR, three siblings; Richard Smith, Daisy Phelen and Deanie Watts, fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
