George W. Hoch was born on September 2, 1844 in Harrisburg, PA. Eleven days after his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the 18th Pa. Cavalry and served in the Union Army until his discharge on June 14, 1865. His service included the Battle of Gettysburg. He served under Gen. George Armstrong Custer. After the war, he returned to Harrisburg, then moved to Washington, PA, then to Canonsburg, PA, where he owned and operated a blacksmith and wagon shop. He married Mary Jane Leech of Canonsburg and had several children. He was active in the Canonsburg Thomas Paxton G.A.R. Post until his death on May 8, 1921.
