Served with the GA National Guard and was an artillery Sergeant in the US Army prior to and during World War II in both France and Germany. Served with Batt B, 925th Field Artillery, the 93rd Field Artillery and Co C, 118th Field Artillery.

Was known as an excellent basketball player in his teens and 20s and was the starting guard for the Jefferson Athletic Club in Savannah. His friends in Savannah also called him "E. C." and "Monk"
