Sixth of eight children of Johannes Schneider (1797-1847) & Katharina Elisabetha Angst (1788-1885), Phoeba immigrated to New York on the Prince Albert with her mother and most of her siblings on Dec. 1, 1850.
She married Heinrich Schenk, a farmer, and had three children before he died in 1862 in Wheeling, IL. The spelling of this family name was later changed to SHANK. A son, Rueben Schenk, died about 1862.
She married her cousin, Jacob Zahn, in Chicago in 1863 and, after living briefly in Chicago, they began farming in Lyman Township of Ford Co. Son Henry Shank came to live with them. Jacob and Phoeba had four children. On their Lyman Township farm she cared for her dying mother, Elizabeth Angst Schneider, managed a farmhouse and raised her children.
