Napoleon was the son of Jerome Bonaparte, King of Westphalia and his second wife Princess Katherine of Wurttemberg. Jerome was the brother of Emperor Napoleon I of France and created king by him.
To cement an alliance with Sardinia-Piedmont, Napoleon married Princess Maria-Ludovica Clothilda of Italy at the insistance of his cousin Emperor Napoleon III of France. It was a very unhappy union and he had numerous affairs. The couple separated in 1870.
They were the parents of Napoleon Victor Jerome Frederick, Napoleon Louis Joseph Jerome, and Marie-Laetizie Eugenie Catherine, Queen of Spain.
