Duane A. Deem - Rockledge - Duane Alan Deem, 77, passed away with his family around him on Sunday, July 19, 2009. Duane was born July 26, 1931 in Champaign, IL to William C. and Sylvia Cottingham Deem. An Air Force veteran, he served on Crash Rescue boats at Cape Canaveral in the early 1950s. Duane earned his B.S. degree in Education from Illinois State University and was an educator at Pleasant View Elementary School in Washington, IL. He returned to Brevard in 1963, where he worked for 30 years as a teacher/ administrator at Golfview, MILA, and Stevenson. Duane was a founding member of the Cocoa-Rockledge Midget Football League, where he coached for many years. He also coached at Rockledge High School, and was a coach for many local Little League and Babe Ruth teams. Duane was a member of First Baptist Church of Cocoa, serving as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He enjoyed writing poetry and his memoirs, collecting recipes, and cooking for family, friends, and church events. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William C. Deem, Jr., and infant son, Michael. Duane is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen H. Deem; sons, Robert (Victoria), Edward (Teresa), and William (Yong), and daughter, Laura Presson (Dan), six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, July 22nd from 6 - 8 p.m. at Florida Memorial Funeral Home, with a funeral service at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 23rd at the First Baptist Church of Cocoa. Interment will follow the funeral service at Florida Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Derby Street Chapel or the First Baptist Church of Cocoa.
