Astronomer and geologist. He is best known as one of the discoverers of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which crashed spectacularly into Jupiter. He had tried to be an astronaut but was unable due to medical reasons. Upon his death, one ounce of his cremated remains were carried to the moon aboard NASA's Lunar Prospector.
