Courier & Freeman - August 9, 1909; Page 3:

Amos Mathews died very suddenly yesterday afternoon at the residence of his niece, Mrs. Jennie Morgan. He was here on a visit. He was born in Potsdam in 1829 on Main Street in what was called the Elderkin house. Sixty years ago he bought 40 acres of land and built a small block house where A. B. Stanton now lives. At that time it was nearly a wilderness and the road wound around among the trees, hardly suitable for a wagon, but a very good road in the winter.

Courier & Freeman - August 18, 1909; Page 5:

A former resident, in the person of Amos Matthews, aged 81 years, was suddenly called away on Sunday, August 8th. Mr. Matthews who was born and raised in this vicinity, has made his home for the past few years at Eldorado Springs, Mo., but at the time of his death was visiting at the home of Mr. Fred Morgan, Pierrepont Ave. He also visited at the home of Frank P. Matthews and his sister, Mrs. Jackson, Clinton Street. The funeral took place on Tuesday, August 10th, from Mr. Morgan's residence and the remains were interred in Garfield cemetery beside his father and grandfather. Coincident with Mr. Amos Matthews visit here was the fact that a brother also arrived here about the same time, and Mr. Matthews son and wife from Brooklins, South Dakota also put in their appearance to visit the same people, each unaware of the others intending visit. But in the end it proved a reunion to attend the funeral of one who was called without a minute's warning. mr. Matthews, having been a resident for many years, will be remembered by many of our older citizens.
