Melvin Paul McCarthy was on June 3, 1921 in Philadelphia Pa. His Parents Henry A McCarthy and Ruth B Bowman McCarthy.


He lived in Philadelphia Pa until the 1930's when he moved to Upper Darby Pa.

He graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1939.He was All American High School Band Member as Trombone.


He joined the US Marine Corps with his cousin Leo McCarthy. When his Mother found he joined the Marine Corps she fainted.


He Landed with 1st Battalion Company D 7th Marine Regiment,3rd Brigade, 1st Marine Division on 1942 in Guadalcanal. He is in episode 2 on Band of Brothers Pacific. He is telling John Bastone that he might be transferred to the band to play Trombone. He is also shown firing a shotgun to defend himself while loading 1917 Browning Water Cooled Machine-gun. He ,John Bastone, and Nash Phillips are only 3 men that survived the night that John Bastone was given the Medal of Honor for his bravery.

He later was transferred US Marine Band for 1st Marine Air Wing Marine Corps NAS Cherry Point, NC.Later he was transferred back to 1st Marine Corps Division as a Riflemen/Band in Okinawa Campaign and for proposed Invasion of Japan. He later did occupation duty in China for surrender of all Japanese Military Forces. He was discharged in at Chicago Great Lakes NAS on July 6, 1946 as a Sgt.


On March 15,1947, he married Elsie Quinlan. They were Divorced 4 years later.


He later married Helen Johnson McCarthy. They produced the following children.
