Was a partner with his brother-in-law (Emil d'Artois) in a real estate venture, also had a stationery store in Los Angeles. He was a member of the Board of Education in Los Angeles but left in a flurry of scandal 1896-1897 when he was accused of extortion. His wife divorced him and he then married the young teacher with whom he was having an affair, Evelyn Augusta Carter (born 6-15-1875 in Missouri, died 3-7-1944 in Alameda, CA), leaving his daughters in Los Angeles with their mother. He took his son, Charles Richard Webb, with him, where he was placed in the boarding school Mt. Tamalpais. Walter and Evelyn relocated to Seattle, WA by 1900 & remained there at least until 1910 (per census of Tacoma), then returned to the Oakland area where Walter was a furniture store salesman and Evelyn was a buyer for a large department store.
