Pfc Alvin A. Iwanski was a soldier in the 39th Infantry Regiment 9th Infantry Division, participating in the invasion of Sicily, (operation Husky). D-Day was 10 July 1943.
He was killed on 6 August 1943 near Palermo. Private First Class Iwanski was buried in the temporary American Cemetery GELA in plot-grave E-60-716. Date of burial was 7 August 1943.
After the war his remains were repatriated and buried in the St Jacobs Cemetery, North Hudson, Indiana.
I am writing a book about the temporary cemetery GELA and hope to finish it next year 2013.
