Jack C. Mapes born at Sea Side Memorial Hosptal in Long Beach, California on January 3, 1946. Parents: Clifford Franklin Mapes and Betty Marie (Conner) Mapes. Grandparents: Chester Mapes and Velma (Myers) Mapes, Charles Conner and Nellie Belle (Taylor) Conner. Siblings: Joan Marie (Mapes) Cobler (oldest sister) and Jerry Joseph Mapes (younger brother).
I have 12 children and 7 grandchildren. First marriage to Carole Lee Ginger prduced; Rodney C. Mapes (35yo), Shellie Rene Mapes (31yo). Second Marriage to Dianna Kay Matheny produced; Scott Furman Mapes (27yo), Tanya Bigfeather Mapes (23yo), Mark Bigfeather Mapes (21yo), Lawrance Lasley (20), Mitchell Bigfeather Mapes(19yo), Lee Ann Bigfeather (Mapes) (18yo) , Lance Mapes (16yo), Pamela Mapes (16yo), Lynn Mapes (14yo), Kodie Mapes (11yo). We live on 120 acres by Holsen Creek at the West end of the Ouachita National Forest in Southeastern Oklahoma near Summerfield. We are located in the Kiamichi Mountains which are the only East-West range of mountains on the North American Continent. These mountains are some of the oldest mountains in the world and at one time were at least as big as the rockies. The land here is very rocky with a wide variety of geological strata consisting of sedimentary sandstone interspersed with shale and exposed by the Ouachita Uplift. Indian legends say that the land here has been turned upside down 7 times. Geologists say the land has been turned at least three time. Indian legend says that this is a spiritual power center. Many arrowheads and fossils are found here abouts.
These mountains provided many outlaws refuge over the centuries and probably still do. The Choctaw Nation was settled here when the tribes were moved from the East.
Wild life is plentiful with deer, bear, mountain lions, bobcats, panthers, wolves, coyote, beaver, mink, otter, wild pigs, ticks, chiggers, and a good variety of reptiles and amphibians. Also we have a wide variety of trees including many types of exotic thorn trees and other flora.
We don't farm or ranch we just have a big backyard. We sell rocks that we pick up out of Holsen Creek for a living.
