OWINGSVILLE OUTLOOK THURSDAY JUNE~16~1898
On last Friday, Mart Gossett, a well-known colored man living on Richard Bigstaff's farm in Flat Creek section. He borrowed a scythe and supposedly went to cut weeds in a graveyard. That day was the last time he was seen alive. His wife, uneasy about his absence, went to Flat Creek store where she was told he had joined the Army and went to Cuba. But upon her travel home, she passed a pool of water on Flat Creek and on looking down, saw her husband body. Inquest ruled death by accidental drowning.
