Born in Rock Hill, Dennis was a son of Harold David Smith and Betty Wolfe Smith Bailey. He served in the United States Army. Mr. Smith was a supervisor at Synteen and attended Spring Hill Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and riding his Harley and his tractor.

Surviving are his wife, Trudy Whitesides Threatt Smith; two sons, Dennis Edward Smith and Christopher Chad Smith, both of Fort Mill; his step-daughters, Misty Stevens, Angela Sanders and Nikki Threatt, all of Lancaster; his father, Harold "Pete" Smith of Pineville; his mother, Betty Smith Bailey of Fort Mill; his brother, Wayne Smith of York; two sisters, Debbie Laney of Fort Mill and Terry Louthan of Pineville; his former wife, Sherry Evan of Fort Mill,14 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends Monday, April 8, 2013 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Carolinas Cornerstone Church, 1790 Gardendale Road in Fort Mill. The memorial service will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Barry Yates officiating.
