Sid Petty was born Aug. 18, 1936, at Platte, S.D., the son of Joseph and Mary Isabelle (Butts) Petty. He died Thursday, April 2 at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.
He attended school at Gordon, Neb., graduating from Gordon High School. Sid traveled extensively with his family during his younger years. Following graduation, he worked at the sawmill in Newcastle. He joined the U.S. Army at Newcastle in 1957. He was stationed in Germany with the 101st Airborne Division.
He married Crystal Bable while stationed in Munich, Germany. He served three tours of duty in Vietnam. Sid retired in 1979 after 24 years of service, locating in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During his military career, he was awarded several medals, including the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and several Purple Heart and air medals. Sid retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He managed the True Value Hardware store and sold real estate while in Colorado. On Dec. 18, 1992 he married Lynn-Ellen Cummings at Upton. Later, the couple moved to Newcastle.
Sid was a member of the National Rifle Association, Newcastle V.F.W. Post 2516, Weston County Sportsman's Club, the Tubb Town Muzzleloaders, and the American Federation of Police. He was an instructor for the hunter safety education program of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, and a serving member of the Republican Committee. He was also a political advocate for the right to keep and bear arms, periodically writing columns for the Casper Star Tribune.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Crystal and one brother, Floyd Petty.
He is survived by his wife, three brothers and two sisters.
