Dr. Magat was born July 16, 1935, in Pampanga, Philippines, to Alfonso and Guadalupe Magat. He was a committed and well-respected general surgeon, practicing medicine for nearly 30 years. Dr. Magat graduated from Manila Central University in the Philippines, followed by an internship at Mercy Hospital and residency in General Surgery at the VA Medical Center both in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1974, he moved with his family to Forest City, Iowa, practicing privately until 1995.
