LEAMINGTON BOY DROWNED
-------------
JERRY KITCHEN CAUGHT by the UNDERTOW and CARRIED OFF HIS FEET
-------------
A sad drowning accident occurred off Point pelee sunday afternoon when Jerry Kitchen, a Leamington boy, while in bathing with his companion, Reginald Williams also of Leamington, was caught in the undercurrent, taken off his feet and drowned in view of his companion.
Williams with his wife and family, accompanied by J. Ktichen went to the Point to spend a day of pleasure along the lake, and shortly after dinner the two men went in for a swim. They had been in for some time, when Kitchen got beyond his depth and was drowned, all traces of him being lost until several hous later.
Williams narrowly escaped a similar fate, but managed to reach the shore in an exhaused condition, too late however, to secure and int ime to save his companion.
Work was at once begun at grappling for the body, but not until 7 o'clock was it recovered.
Kitchen was 20 years of age, and had been a resident of Leamington for several years, where he has been employed by his father in a (machine) shop. He was a clever young man and very popular in the town. His young associates feel his sudden loss very keenly.
The place selected by the unfortunate young man for bathing is probably the most dangerous one in Lake Erie. There is a continuous undercurrent flowing around and across the Point. In the past few years there have been many very narrow escapes at this Point.
The funeral services on Tuesday afternoon were largely attended, and many earnest expressions of sympathy were given to his surviving relatives.
