See that picture over there?:) --> We have none of our little girl. This one is very much like her coloring, tho. And something about the eyes...
July '64: I moved onto DH's state w/no pet. It took all of ½ a day for me to get antsy. When we arrived at DH's parents' I found their beautiful white w/orange, outdoor female cat, "Mama Kitty". She was not spayed. (This was back in the early 60s... neutering pets hadn't yet become our social conscience.) She had 3 kittens: an orange striped tabby, a tri-color, and one like Mama. DH was hesitant about getting an indoor "anything", and especially the vet bills. But I persevered:) I picked the beautiful Calico, named her Widget, prepared her litter box next to the "big litter box" in the bathroom of our 1st apartment, and we were good to... go.
So loving and cuddly; playful, funny, soft and dainty little thing, my Wee Widgie. We took to each other quickly. I hadn't had a kitten in a long time, and was enjoying getting familiar w/another kind of furry. We'd had her in our home less than a week when she got sick. Even tho she'd been given all her shots before we brought her home, distemper had already taken over her little body. She died 2wks from the day we brought her home. I'd taken her to the vet x4 days for IV meds and fluids trying to keep her hydrated. The vet did all he could do and more. (I would forever love this man!) The litter died. Mama Kitty died. Widget was the last. She died on the way to the vet on the 5th day. We buried her where she was born. She is the only one of our fur family not buried here at home. I've half thought to dig up the backyard of a person we don't know to find her.
No other being can replace a little soul we've lost. To bring in another needing "forever-ness" is, to me, a process that honors those we grieve for, and eases the void.
Aug '64: I'll wait a few days, then start calling around the vets' offices for a critter w/o a home.
