Sept '64: I'd never been so long w/o a dog. We had married and moved out of (my) state, leaving my family dog, Shadow. In the town I now lived, and after losing little kitty Widget, I called every vet in the book for -anything- needing a home. Back then there were no independent shelters here. Just a pound, and nothing there. Next, were "cold calls". The first vet had nothing. But, as I was turning to walk out the door, a man burst thru and threw a black small-to-medium sized dog on the floor. I picked him up and cuddled him, he was shaking w/terror. "You want that dog, Missy?" "Yeah... he's mine already!" He left the building and the front office gal gave me the info on the dog: a cocker mix, and including the name "FiFi"... a male! On the drive home I started thinking about that name... all I could come up w/that sounded like it was "PeeWee".
Poor thing was a mud hole w/legs. Drew the bathwater; an entire bottle of the old Breck shampoo (remember that?) for bubble bath and scrubbing. When I dried him off, I found a medium length, wavy-coated, jet-black Cutie. He assumed this special proud stance like a winning show dog. He was liking everything else happening to him this day! When DH came home, I met him on the porch and explained "our" new 1˝yo pal. "Okay, let's go meet him." What happened next we still talk about. Jekyll morphed into Hyde and was lunging at DH, a seething growl! A deep fear of men, and why not? I expected DH to say "Begone", but he saw I already loved this critter, and was afraid he'd be returned to the ogre. "Okay, we'll take it slow. maybe he'll learn to like me." THOUGHT I WOULD FAINT... and loved DH even more.
Rest of the story: They became fast friends (over a year's time lol), PW eventually learned to trust him, and DH learned to love this 4-legged. And since, DH has become an animal-crazy person, too. Nice, huh!
PW rode shotgun in the car w/me everywhere I went on short errands. He loved it! When we went on trips he'd bark and growl at cows, slobbering all over the passenger side window. We wondered if the ogre had cows. When we visited w/my parents, either here or there, Daddy's dog, Shadow, and PeeWee didn't get along. At all. The picture on my daddy's memorial page is him hanging on to (bigger) Shadow who was fussin' at PeeWee, who was fussin' back. There was no room for two top dogs:) When our first child was born, PeeWee slept under the crib as if to guard him. He was such a buddie, never failing to assume his winning "stance" in our lives.
PeeWee was young when we moved to the country where we still live. We had him quite a few years before we said our goodbyes, but of course there are never enough. He's the first buried in our Boot Hill, and all the rest are there w/him. That's a good reason to live in one place forever. The only one of our pals we don't have in our "care", is sweet little Widget kitty.
A man may smile and bid you hail,
yet wish you to the devil.
But when a good dog wags his tail,
you know he's on the level.
