Participated with his regiment in the defense of Washington, D.C. (Fall 1861).

Killed in action at Frampton's Plantation during the Battle of Pocotaligo, South Carolina 22 October 1862. (Note: As with many of the soldiers from the 47th who were killed during the fighting at Frampton's, no burial record for Henry Stambaugh has been found to date. The source which documents his death at Frampton's Plantation is the volunteer soldier's death ledger entry completed for him by J.H. Sheetz, M.D., A.R.S. (the assistant surgeon for the 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers).
