Obituary
Barbara "Bobbye" Smith Corrales, 62, a native of Morgan City and resident of Carencro and College Station, Texas, died Thursday, April 13, 2006.

A "Celebration of Life" is planned for family and friends from 6 to 9 p.m. June 9 at the home of Michael and Cynthia Fernandez.

She is survived by her husband, John M. Corrales, Jr.; her mother, Theresa Smith Whatley; three sisters, Theresa S. Thompson, Patricia S. Fitzgerald and Cynthia S. Fernandez, all of Lafayette; one sister-in-law, Lisa Smith of Donner; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gordon L. Smith; her son, Don Paul Rodrigue; and one brother; Gordon L. Smith, Jr.

She was a graduate of Morgan City High. In 1993, she earned her bachelor?s degree in history at Northwestern State University (Magna Cum Laude). In 1996, she earned her master?s in history at University Southwestern Louisiana and was currently a graduate student pursuing her Ph.D. in history at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Her work was published in the Journal of Louisiana History, Dictionary of Louisiana Biography, the Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial Series in Louisiana History and the Attakapas Gazette. She was a member of many honor societies and was a research associate for the Center for Louisiana Studies. She was also a member of the publication committee for the Louisiana Historical Association.

She was affectionately known as The "Grande Dame" to many and was admired for her great humor, intelligence, creativity and humility. She will be greatly missed by those who love her.
