Jerry Doyle Campbell Sr., 80 years old, born July 20, 1921 in Humble, Texas, to Josephine Riley Campbell and Milton Diel Campbell passed away February 6, 2002.
His family moved to Houston and Jerry started school at Burnett Elementary, attending Deady Junior High and Austin High School before moving to Nebraska to live with uncle Clyde Speck and Aunt Laura Speck, where he graduated from Sunflower High School in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. In 1940, following high school graduation, he joined the Army and was assigned to the 104th Howitzer Division, training in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He then went on to Camp David North Carolina ( Medical Division) 10th Army Division. He transferred to the United States Army Air Force in 1942 and was assigned to the 8th Air Force in World War II. In the fall of 1944, he was stationed at Doepham Green Airfield, southwest of Wymondham, England, and flew numerous missions with the 452nd B-17 Bomb Group, 730th Bomb Squadron, over Europe during the war, Although his B-17 was shot down over Hamburg, Germany, he escaped with the help of the French underground.
After returning from the war, Jerry attended the University of Houston seeking a degree in geology. He worked with Joske's, Sears and Montgomery Ward and operated his own decorating, carpet and retail business. He was later engaged in the Real Estate business, both commercial and resort properties. Jerry became an ardent lover of boats and all water sports that remained with him until his health would no longer permit his participation.
Jerry was the beloved father of daughter, Laura Watts Medina and son, Jerry D. Campbell, Jr.; grandchildren, Robert W. Watts, Amy K. Watts Donnelly, Jonathan C. Watts, Daniel P. Watts, Sara E. Watts, Jami A. Campbell, Zachary P. Campbell and Wendi A. Campbell; great-grandchildren, Charles W. Watts, Averi A. Fischer, Hali A. Fischer, Austin R. Campbell, and Mrs. Jo Anne Campbell and best friend, Nancy Rose.
He was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Ella Riley and mother, Josephine (Riley) Campbell Hatfield.
