DOROTHY ANN OROPEZA

Dorothy Ann Oropeza, 79, of Orlando, Fla., beloved wife, mother and grandma, passed into eternal peace at home on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013.

She was born on March 28, 1933, in Orlando to the late James and Kathryn (McKay) Miller.

Dorothy is survived by Kaki (Oscar), her loving husband of 63 years; sons, Mark (Terry) Oropeza of Columbus, Ga., Keith (Kathleen) Oropeza, and daughter, Elaine (Greg) Galloway, both of Orlando; six grandsons: Christopher and Andrew Oropeza, Nicholas and Alexander Oropeza and Graham and Jordan Galloway. In Key West she is survived by brothers-in-law: Macho (Carleen) Oropeza and Danny (Chomi) Oropeza; nieces and nephews: Scott (Beth), Todd (Alicia), Kim, Rachel; grand-nieces and nephews: Greg (Loren), Megan, Katelyn, Brooke, Blake and Victoria Oropeza and in Miami by nephew Danny (Suzette) Oropeza Jr.; and grand-nieces: Jenny, Jordan, Jessica and Hailey Oropeza.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her brothers James Miller and Gurdon Hamilton.

Dorothy lived in Orlando and attended Princeton Elementary School, then moved to Key West, where she met Kaki. She was active in the Key West High School Student Council and Flag Corp and she and Kaki were voted "Cutest Couple." Following graduation from KWHS, Dorothy studied at Colorado Women's College and Florida State University.

In 1953, Dorothy married Kaki at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church and the couple moved to Miami, established a home and raised their children. Dorothy was active at Cutler Ridge United Methodist Church, served as a docent at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, worked as a secretary for the Miami-Dade Public School System and traveled to the United Nations as part of the UNICEF program. Dorothy moved to Arcadia, Fla., in 1985, where she was active in the Trinity Unity Methodist Church and a member of the L & E Club. Dorothy and Oscar moved to Orlando in 2000 to be close to the grandchildren.

Dorothy saw homemaking as her "life major." She was an accomplished cook, seamstress, organizer, gardener and was an avid reader. Dorothy had an artistic eye and a strong sense of style. She had a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of old Florida. Dorothy loved the mountains and spent decades of happy summers at the family river cabin in North Carolina.

Dorothy especially cherished her time with her beloved grandsons. She enjoyed reading to them, teaching them to cook, walking with them to the park, attending ball games and endlessly playing cards.

A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Feb. 1, 2013, at the College Park Baptist Church, 1914 Edgewater Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, 407-843-0140.
