Stump's 1994 biography was ostensibly a "set the record straight" tome that purported to describe to the world the real Ty Cobb. However the rest of the story may well be found in an essay published by William R. Cobb (no relation) in 2010 after four years of research on the vast amount of Ty Cobb memorabilia that originated with Al Stump.
The heavily indexed and footnoted article thoroughly debunks such things as the shotgun death of Cobb's father (it was a pistol), the many false Ty Cobb diaries, and a veritable trove of letters and documents with forged signatures of Ty Cobb.
While Ty Cobb certainly was no saint, much of what we "know" of him through Stump's book and the film it inspired, are likely pure rubbish. I would urge anyone to make it their business to read the investigative article by William R. Cobb, The Georgia Peach: Stumped by the Storyteller.
