Alexander McMillen, Sr., was born in New Boston, New Hampshire, the son of John McMillen and Rachel (nee Steele) McMillen. He married Hannah Bailey, the daughter of Timothy and Hannah Bailey about 29 May 1795 in Hollis, New Hampshire.
In 1798, Alexander purchased land and moved his family to Littleton, New Hampshire, where he followed the trade of wheelwright. About 1812, he and several of his siblings and cousins moved to Freeport, Ontario County, New York (later re-named Conesus, Livingston County). Toward the end of his life, he moved with two of his children to Wisconsin.
The children of Alexander and Hannah are Alexander, Jr. (who married Sarah "Sally" Curtiss), Syrena (who married Morris Taylor after the death of her sister), John (who married Sarah Spencer), Sabrina (who married Morris Taylor), Joseph, Moses (who married Jane ———), and Hannah (who married David C. Taylor).
