Birth: Nov., 1835
Cumberland County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Apr. 28, 1908
Dewey
Champaign County
Illinois, USA

Moses and Aaron Hillsberry, twin sons of Harmon Hillberry, were born about 1835 near Leesburg, Southampton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Their mother’s name remains unknown.

The Hillsberry family moved in 1853 from Pennsylvania to Champaign County, Illinois, where Harmon Hillsberry entered land and farmed in what would later be called East Bend Township.

Moses "Hillsbury" on 5 August 1861 enlisted as a private for 3 years’ service, and on the same day mustered in Company I, 25th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. According to his enlistment papers, he was a single farmer resident in East Bend Township, age 26 (born about 1835), and born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was 5 feet, 7 inches tall, had brown hair, blue eyes, and a dark complexion. On 16 January 1862 at Rolla, Missouri, Private Hillsberry was given a disability discharge for "intermittent first & then typhoid fever subsequently [...] entirely unfit for service." During Private Hillsberry’s 5 months of service, the 25th Illinois did not participate in combat. (His four brothers also served in Union units during the war; one did not survive.) Just 2 days after Moses Hillsberry’s discharge, his father died, leaving land to each of his children. Moses Hillsberry and Mary Jane Smith were married on 20 May 1862 in Champaign County.

Moses "Hillbery" on 23 February 1865 enlisted again as a private for 3 years’ service, and on the same day mustered in Company I, 155th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. (Mustering in the same company on the same day were his brothers-in-law Corporal Charles Knell and Private Isaac Painter.) Less than 4 months later, on 19 June 1865, Private Hillsberry was discharged for mental illness.

Moses Hillsbury was enumerated in 1870 as a farmer in East Bend Township. His subsequent decline is seen in censuses and other records. He was enumerated in 1880 as a servant apart from his wife and children's household. By 1890, a conservator for Moses Hillsberry stated that he was "now insane and totally disabled [...] unable to care for himself. In the 1900 census, his wife Mary was the head of household. Moses Hillsberry died in 1908. His Civil War pension card confirms his service in "I, 25 & I, 155 Ill Inf."

Date of birth. The date of birth calculated from the headstone inscription--12 Sep 1830--does not appear to be correct. Moses Hillsberry's age was reported inconsistently, indicating a year of birth from 1830 to 1838. In the 1870 census, the only one in which he was enumerated as a head of household, he is reported to be age 35, thus born about 1835. Twin Aaron Hillsberry's age was reported more consistently, indicating a year of birth from 1835 to 1837, and in the 1900 census he reported that he was age 64 and born in November 1835. The twins were born after elder brother William, born about 1833, and before younger sister Mary Jane, born about 1837.

Place of birth. In their enlistment papers, both William and Moses reported Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Sister Mary Jane’s obit. specifies "Leesburg, Pa."
