George grew up on a farm, but at some point in his teens he went to work at local saw mill as a sawyer. At age nineteen he volunteered for the Union Army and joined Regiment 70, Co., G of the Indiana Infantry Volunteers. He saw duty as a sawyer in Nashville, TN.
He was wounded in the Battle of Resaca, Georgia on May 14-15, 1864. He was removed to the Jefferson General Hospital in Jefferson, IN, where he became a nurse and an "investigator" (researcher) after his own recovery. He was mustered out June 19, 1865, and married Sally (Sarah) Jane Tedrow on September 3, 1865, in Indianapolis.
He went to work for a drug and tobacco company as a druggist while he studied medicine with an Indianapolis physician. In 1870, George was listed in the Indianapolis City Directory as a Physician and the following year as a Physician and Surgeon. His health which had been compromised ever since the Battle of Resaca began to worsen and he applied for an Invalid's Pension. His health continued to worse and he died of consumption.
