Herbert H. Johnson was born to Rev. Weston T. Johnson and Sarah MacLeod Johnson on Nov. 19, 1911 in Sapparo, Hokaido, Japan where his parents were missionaries of the Presbyterian Church U.S. The family returned to the United States in 1918 due to Mrs. Johnson's health.
Herbert Johnson attended public schools in San Francisco, graduating from Lowell High School in 1929. He attended The University of Southern California where he received a BS in Business Administration in 1934. While at USC he became a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After graduation he was employed by Frazar and Company, one of the first trading companies established by Commodore Perry in the 1850s in Japan.
In 1937, he went to work for The Quaker Oats Company and was employed there for nearly 40 years. On Oct. 4, 1939, he married Ann Elizabeth Pickett in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The young couple established residence in El Paso, Texas where Mr. Johnson represented The Quaker Oats Company in West Texas. In 1943, Johnson volunteered for duty in the United States Navy where he rose in rank from apprentice "Seaman" to Lieutenant. During the war, he served on the staff of the Commanding General Vth Amphibious Corps — Civil Affairs Division. He received a graduate degree in Naval Intelligence at Stanford University in 1946. After retirement from the Navy, Johnson returned to The Quaker Oats Company in Los Angeles, California. In 1948 he was made manager of the Flour Department at Quaker's Floor and Feed Mill. In 1953 he was made manager of the Flour and Grain Department. During his period at the Los Angeles mill he served as the 43rd President of the Los Angeles Grain Exchange. In 1957 he was elected Vice President of the California Hay Grain and Feed Dealers Association. The Quaker Oats Company purchased Wolf Brand Products of Corsicana in 1957. In 1958, Johnson was transferred to Corsicana to become president of Wolf Brand Products, a wholly owned subsidiary. He retired from Quaker Oats in 1973. During his years in Corsicana, Mr. Johnson served as the President of the Corsicana Chamber of Commerce, President of the Community Chest (forerunner of the United Way), President of the Corsicana YMCA, and President of the Corsicana Country Club. During the early 1960s, he served two terms as City Commissioner, including one term serving as Mayor Pro Tem, but actually filled the office because the mayor elect was incapacitated by illness.He was ordained as Elder of the Presbyterian Church and was a faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann Carolyn (Candy) Hill, son-in-law William T. Hill Jr.; son, James Weston Johnson and wife Karen Kennedy Johnson of Ruston, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Kelley Hill Feste of San Antonio, William T. "Trey" Hill III of Dallas, Emily Hill Alexander of Arlington, Katherine Ann Johnson of Austin, Jenny Frances Johnson of Dallas, and 13 great-grandchildren.
