Adam was one of 8 children born to John and Mary An Sheeler. John and Mary An were both born in Germany.
Adam was born in Greenport, NY and the family moved to the Kulpmont, PA area when he was young.
Adam started boxing in the local area and then travelled up and down the PA-MD corridor. When he initially boxed in Maryland in 1916, he was announced as the "Featherweight Champion of Pennsylvania" already having fought 57 fights. He fought another 27 fights through 1922 for a total of at least 84 fights by the time he was 31 years old. It is unknown if there were other bouts that weren't recorded in the newspapers. By the end of his career, he was fighting in the middleweight division.
Adam married Mae Retallick sometime before 1914. They had 5 children: Emma. Minnie (Adkins), Charlotte (Miller), Herbert and Edith (Rothbard).
After his boxing career was over, Adam owned a speakeasy in the Kulpmont area and then eventually was working in the mines in the Kulpmont/Minersville area.
Adam died on January 8, 1933, in Minersville, PA. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carmel, PA.
