GEPHART, ERNEST BENTON "GEP" April 2, 1923 to March 26, 2006 Lieutenant Commander Ernest B. Gephart, U.S. Navy Retired, went to be with his Lord on March 26, 2006. Ernest was born in Illinois on April 2, 1923, the son of Thomas Daniel Gephart and Violet Belle Woody Gephart. He was the oldest son of 11 children. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II, and continued his Naval career for 30 years. He met his beloved wife Patricia while stationed in San Diego, CA and they were married in July of 1947. In 1970, the Navy Commendation Medal was awarded to Lt. Cmdr. Ernest Benton Gephart for meritorious service. Lt. Cmdr. Gephart distinguished himself by his outstanding leadership, professional competence, organizational ability and dedication to superior standards. On November 21, 1972 Lt. Cmdr. Gephart was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of the second Navy Commendation Medal. The citation read: "Lt. Cmdr. Gephart inspirational leadership, outstanding judgment and dedicated devotion to duty reflected great credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval service." On July 9, 1934, Ernest, age 11 years, was baptized into Christ in a creek nearby Elliottstown, Illinois. In 1939 Ernest accepted a position of deacon at the Christian Church in Elliottstown and served in that capacity until he joined the U.S. Navy and relocated to California. Throughout his military career "Gep" continued to be active in the work of Christ and following his retirement from the U.S. Navy in July 1972 he was able to devote himself fulltime to his work at Lemon Grove Christian Church. In recent years he was presented with an honorarium by his beloved church family thanking him for serving Christ's Church for 37 years as "Elder-Counselor- Teacher-Overseer-Shepherd- Servant". He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Patricia; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Robin Gephart of La Mesa, CA; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Michaelanne Gephart of San Diego, CA; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Floyd Wilson of Santa Rosa, CA; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Barbara Gephart of San Diego, CA and daughter Viki Lozano of Dallas, TX. He left behind seven grandchildren, Christine Gephart of Sonoma, CA; Jeff Gephart of Palm Desert, CA; Jenine Gephart of Seattle, WA; Monique Gephart Perez of San Diego, CA; Michael and Alan Gephart of San Diego, CA and Floyd Wilson III of Santa Rosa, CA, and his only great-grandchild, Gavin Amos Gephart of Seattle, WA. Services will be held on Thursday March 30, 2006 at Lemon Grove Christian Church, 6970 San Miguel, Lemon Grove, CA, 91945 at 2:00 p.m. In keeping with Gep's wishes memorial donations may be made to Lemon Grove Christian Church in his name.
