CITY'S OLDEST CITIZEN DIES EARLY SUNDAY

J. M. Schleef, New Haven's oldest and most beloved citizen, died at his home early Sunday morning. He had been bedfast for only a few months and had been blessed with vigorous health during practically all of his long life. He was a pioneer merchant.

Mr. Schleef moved to this community from Warren county with his family when he was a small boy. The family located on the Huvendick farm on Boeuf creek. When young Martin grew to early manhood, he decided to be a business man and clerked in the Patton General Store which in the early days was located where the Harris-Langenberg Hat Factory now stands. Later he clerked in the L. G. Grannemann store. The goal he had set for himself was achieved when he became the owner of a hardware store. This he operated for many years. When the town and community needed a tinner, he learned the trade and became highly proficient at it.

Long after most men of his age would have been retired, "J. M.", as he was widely called, continued to climb over high roofs and work alone at a hazardous job. His friends often marveled at his daring and agility. He considered work an essential ingredient of happiness.

Always interested in community progress, good schools and churches, he got great satisfaction in viewing the almost unbelievable advances over a period of practically 94 years. Born in the pioneering age of America, he lived to see the dawn of the atomic age. Mr. Schleef was an ardent church worker and the oldest member of the Emory Methodist church here. He was a charter member of the local Modern Woodman lodge.

His wide circle of kin and friends knew and admired him for his jovial disposition, his warm heart and his appreciation for the every-day blessings of life. He felt especially blessed that his wife could share most of his long life. She died only a few years ago.

Mr. Schleef was born on April 13, 1860 and departed this life on Sunday, January 31, 1954 at the age of 93 years, 9 months and 18 days. He was united in marriage to Emelia S. Rhode at Hawk Point, MO, on June 9, 1881.

He is survived by three children, Mrs. Nettie Murphy of New Haven, Miss Cora Schleef of St. Louis and Clarence Schleef of Kansas City, MO, Russell, Lucille, James and Ellis Murphy are his surviving grandchildren.

Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon at Emory Methodist church. Interment was in the Cedar Grove cemetery south of New Haven.
