Nathan Cohen, a real pioneer resident of Douglas, having come to the city in 1902, died yesterday from the infirmities of old age. He was in his 84th year and had been bothered for the last two or three years with a cardiac ailment. Funeral services will be conducted this morning at 10 in Porter and Ames mortuary chapel and burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
Nathan Cohen was a native of Vilna, Russia, now a part of Poland. He was born in 1852 but left his native land when a boy of 17 years and went to Sweden where he remained for a year before sailing for America. He came first to Boston, Mass., and was in business there for a time.
When he lived in Boston, Mr. Cohen removed all thought of returning to live in his native land. He took out naturalization papers and became a citizen of the United States. He always proved a loyal citizen of the country of his adoption and also took an active interest as a voter throughout his life.
More than 60 years ago, the deceased, removed from Boston to Dallas, Texas, where he engaged in business and where he met and married Mrs. Levy, mother of Jake Levy of Tucson and Ben Levy of Douglas, know as the Levy Brothers. She died some 20 years ago, in Douglas. In 1902, Mr. Cohen brought his family to Douglas and made this city his home. He opened a men's clothing store in the room now occupied by Bernard Brody's shop at 915 G Avenue. He continued in that business until after the World War, when his only child, Joseph Cohen, who served with the United States navy, had returned to his home here. Then the senior Mr. Cohen closed out his business and had since lived in retirement.
Mr. Cohen was a member of the Elks lodge, that being his only lodge affiliation. He had been a faithful member of the Jewish congregation in Douglas, being its president for many years and always a loyal member of the faith. He will be given the Jewish funeral rites this morning.
It is the request of the family that there be no flowers sent. The funeral rites will be in accordance with the Jewish orthodox faith.
