Rhoda A. Huff Haynes died at the age of 63 years and 3 days on August 6, 1845. She was buried in what is known as the John B. Haynes Cemetery near Fordsville, Ohio County, Kentucky. After Rhoda's death John Barton Haynes married Hulda (Ross) Garth, the widow of William Garth and the mother of Elizabeth Garth Midkiff. Hulda was born about 1800 in Ohio. John Barton Haynes died at the age of 81 years on June 30, 1863 near Fordsville, Ohio County, Kentucky. He was buried in the family cemetery on his land. The cemetery is now known as the Haynes Cemetery #1.
According to Haynes researcher, Mary Russelberg Haynes, John Barton Haynes requested that he be buried under a concrete slab because he was afraid that bears might try to dig him up. The story told her by his great, great, great grandson was that John was on his way to the grist mill with a sack of corn when a bear treed him and wouldn't leave until a neighbor later discovered them and scared the bear away.
