Family members and friends of a pioneer Arizona family gathered at the Champie family cemetery at Castle Hot Springs Saturday, Oct. 20 to pay their respects to the memory of Pearl Champie Hurd, 94, who died in August in Camp Verde, Her ashes were interred in the family plot.

Mrs. Hurd was born in 1896 in Louisiana. She came to Arizona in 1916 from Texas to teach the Champie children and she married Charles Champie.

Charles Champie died in 1922 in an automobile accident and she later married Cecil Hurd of Texas.

Mrs. Hurd was the postmaster at Castle Hot Springs from 1937 to 1966. Following her retirement, she and her husband moved to Glendale, where he died in 1976.

A service was conducted by the Rev. Robert M. Baird, and following the service a buffet for some 75 persons who attended was served at the historic Champie School Building.
