GREENSBORO, NC - Frederick Emil Barakat, 71, passed away June 21, 2010.

He was born April 8, 1939, in Jersey City, NJ, to the late Della and Fred Barakat.

Funeral service was Friday, June 25, at 10 am at The Greensboro War Memorial Auditorium, 1921 West Lee Street, Greensboro.

He graduated from Emerson High School in Union City, NJ, before attending Assumption College in Worcester, MA, where he was an All-American in both basketball and baseball.

In his Junior year he was drafted by the New York Giants to play baseball but chose to stay in school.

After graduation, he was drafted by the New York Knicks and pursued an opportunity to play professional basketball.

He began his coaching career at Hasbrouck Heights High School, where he also taught several subjects while pursuing his Master's Degree in Psychology from Montclair State University.

In 1966, he returned to Assumption to work for his former coach and mentor, Andy Laska. He coached basketball, tennis and soccer. Following his time at Assumption, he made a stop at the University of Connecticut where he worked for another good friend, Dee Rowe, as an assistant basketball coach before accepting the Head Coach position at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. He coached there from 1970-81 and is still the winningest coach in Stags history.

He is also a member of the Emerson High School, New England Basketball, Hudson County (NJ), Assumption College, and Fairfield University Athletic Halls of Fame.

In 1981, the Atlantic Coast Conference created the position of Men's Basketball Supervisor of Officials. He accepted the position and relocated his family to North Carolina.

He was later named Assistant Commissioner and was then promoted to Associate Commissioner, Director of Men's Basketball. For 16 years he served as the ACC Tournament Director along with his other basketball responsibilities that included scheduling, managing the league's television partners and officiating.

Fred retired in 2007 which allowed him to spend more time with his family and enjoy the finer pleasures of life, including playing golf and traveling. Once in retirement, he managed to stay busy through various consulting opportunities, including appointments with UNCG and ESPN.

He is survived by Florence, his wife of 44 years, and his children Nancy Vaughan (Don) of Greensboro, Christie Barakat of Florence, Italy, Amy Cook (Brian) of Greensboro and his only son, Rick (Alison Wales Barakat), of Blacksburg, VA.

He also had eight grandchildren and two sisters, Linda Bohn and Kathleen Wagner (Joseph), both of Greensboro.
