GRANT'S VALET DIES IN DENVER, WEDDED AT 65.

W.H. Perkins, 73, General Grant's orderly at the battle of Vicksburg, and in recent years a prominent Colorado stockman, died at a private hospital here yesterday morning as the result of a cancer.

Perkins was born on a farm near Indianapolis, May 20, 1840. In early childhood he moved with his parents to Salem, Iowa, where he was reared. At the opening of the civil war he enlisted in Company G, Fourth Iowa cavalry. His bravery in action brought him to the notice of the commander in chief, who appointed him his orderly. He served in this capacity until the Vicksburg surrender. After that battle he received an honorable discharge from service on account of lung trouble and settled in eastern Kansas.

In 1875 he came to Pueblo, where he remained four years, then went South to Texas, where for two years he interested himself in the cattle business. The fame of Wyoming as a grazing country drew him North, but he finally settled in Routt county and began raising stock on a larger scale.

In 1908 he moved to Denver and in 1909 he married Mary Duncan, youngest daughter of the late Elisha Duncan. The two then took up their residence on the Duncan estate near Longmont.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 4, from the Denver Undertaking and Vault company's establishment.
