Carol was born on May 14, 1949, in Illinois to George and June Harris. She attended Clute Elementary and Jr. High schools and graduated from Brazosport High School in 1967. Carol obtained a B.A. degree in English Literature from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and began a successful teaching career. During her 35 years at Columbia-Brazoria High School, she served as the English department chairman, and, until her death, the Intervention Coordinator for at-risk students.
Carol was very active in the Brazoria County Fair Association for many years, culminating in her election as president in 2007. Her dedication to her job was an inspiration to all. She also was an active member of the Lake Jackson Jaycee-Ettes, holding many local and statewide offices, and served as the state president.
Carol was preceded in death by her father, George Harris.
She is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Charlie Henkes of Brazoria; her daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and David Banks of Tennessee; her mother, June Harris of Lake Jackson; her sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Jim Schutt of Guatemala; her stepdaughters, Lori Caldwell and husband Jeff of San Marcos and DeeDee Skidmore of Austin; her stepson, Robert Henkes and wife Kim of Bertram; her mother-in-law, Mrs. F.E. Henkes, sister-in-law, Joyce Henkes, and brother-in-law, Milton Henkes and wife Sandy, all of Austin; eight grandchildren; four great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Carol also is survived by her large extended family of friends.
Carol requested that her body be cremated.
