Milford bids fond farewell to superintendent Foran:
City residents paid their last respects to Joseph A. Foran Thursday afternoon, turning out in droves at Smith Funeral Home to share stories, laughter and tears about a man who inspired generations. "He was probably the most powerful influence in my life," said Jackie Whitehead Musante, who traveled from Easton to say good-bye to her former high school civics teacher.
"He was a wonderful motivator," said Musante, a member of the former Milford High School class of 1944 who received her diploma from Foran. "Everyone who knew him as a teacher knew he was a wonderful teacher."
Such superlatives abounded as city officials, former students, teachers and neighbors chatted about Foran, who was Milford's superintendent of schools from 1945 to 1967. Joseph A. Foran High School is named in his honor.
Foran, 95, died Sunday.
About 500 people from around the state turned out for the six-hour wake. A memorial Mass will be celebrated April 27.
MaryLou Vitelli, a longtime teacher in city schools, said she first met Foran when she was about 10 years old, then knew him while she was student here. Later, when Vitelli was a college student studying to be a teacher, she ran into Foran and he asked her whether she wanted a classroom that was sunny in the morning or in the afternoon, Vitelli said.
"I told him that I was only a sophomore, and he said, 'Then we'll just have to wait for you,' " Vitelli said. "He was a kind and loving gentleman."
Foran also was renowned for his memory, photographic for all intents and purposes, said City Historian Richard Platt.
"He was a treasure trove of Milford history," said Platt, who knew Foran since the 1940s. "Now there are fewer and fewer people I can consult on Milford history."
Resident Margaret Casey, 86, who was at the wake with her son, former state Rep. T.J. Casey, R-Milford, said she went to work for the Milford schools in 1937, and she and Foran had been friends ever since.
"He was dedicated, he was fantastic," Casey said. "He was just a nice guy."
