According to Attaway family oral history, Freeman H. Attaway was a hard working man. He also had a thirst for knowledge, and was a very determined person. He split rails and built fences for 30 to 50 cents a day to earn money for school. When he had enough saved he walked from his home in Franklin County, Georgia to North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, Georgia. This was a 65 plus mile walk through the North Georgia wilderness.
