Samuel Baker Swartz was born in Perry County, Pennsylvania, the son of John &
Catherine Rice Swartz, and was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Knight Swartz, whom
he married on August 11, 1867, in Missouri. In 1860, he was a farmer living in
Rochester Township, Andrew County, Missouri. The couple produced 14 children over 21 years.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Rochester Township April 3, 1862, with the
1st Missouri Battery, Light Artillery Militia, aka Waschman's Battery.
Honorably discharged January 17, 1864.

Samuel's wife, Elizabeth Knights family goes back to Henry 7th of England, father of Henry 8th and Mary Tudor who is the ancestor of Elizabeth Knight.
