Dean O. Pounds, son of Lee Hoisington and Estella Esther Pounds, was born Oct 26, 1909, on a farm in the Womer community. He died May 1, 1993, in Smith Center while on his morning walk.
The third of four sons, Dean attended elementary. School at Womer, graduated from Smith Center High School in 1927, and attended Sterling College.
On Jan. 6 1935, Dean was united in marriage to Bertha M. Schneiber. To this union were born two daughters, Linda Lee and Barbara Elaine.
Always needing to be busy, Dean engaged in a variety of vocations including operating a gasoline transport, farming, retail business and the construction of several homes in Smith Center and the vicinity.
He was active in many Masonic activities including membership in Western Star Lodge No. 174 since 1938 and Isis Temple Shrine in Salina since 1968. After losing his vision in 1988, his daily walks and visits with friends and family brought his greatest joy.
Survivors are his loving wife, Bertha; two daughters, Linda Arnold and husband Larry of Washington, D. C., and Barbara Bailey and husband Don of Denver, Colo.; two granddaughters, Kristina Lauer and husband Fred of Kansas City, and Augusta Olsen of Washington D. C.; three brothers, Roger and wife Dorothy of McPherson, Andrew of McMinnville, Ore., and Darrell of Humeston, Iowa; and in a host of friends.
Funeral services were May 4 at Simmons Chapel, Smith Center, with Rev. Jim Godsey officiating and Pastor Donald R. Bailey assisting, Kathy McCary and R. G. Sheppard were vocalists for "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" and "In The Garden" Jodi Besthorn was accompanist.
Casket bearers were Bill Overmiller, Bob Overmiller, Steve Overmiller, Jay Overmiller, Skip Overmiller, and Larry Overmiller. Honorary bearers were Claude Overmiller, Myron McDonald, Royal Lattin, Harry Weaver, Dick Mountford and Cecil Sealock. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center.
