Chief Carpenter Mate Cox was both a World War I and World War II Navy veteran. He first joined the United States Navy in January of 1917 and eventually retired in April of 1945. While with the Navy he saw sea duty on the USS Western Chief, the USS Mississippi, the USS Fulton, the USS Langley, the USS Altair, the USS Doyen, the USS Rigel, the USS Gannet, the USS Saratoga and the USS Ramapo. He saw shore duty at the Naval Training Station in Great Lakes, IL; Receiving Ship in Norfolk, VA; Navy Recruiting Station in Kansas City, MO; Navy Yard in Philadelphia, PA; Receiving Station in San Francisco, CA; and Receiving Ship Puget Sound, WA. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal with one reenlistment bar, World War I Victory medal, American Defense Service medal with "Fleet" bar, American Theater Campaign medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, and World War II Victory medal.
