When Charles Thomas Etty was born on September 8, 1923, in Orlando, Florida, his father Robert Christopher "Bob" Etty was 24 and his mother, Doris Eugenia Johns Etty was 21. He had one sister, Eloise, who was two years older than him. Charles joined the Marine Corps during World War II and his branch of service was Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Corps, 4th Marine Division. On February 20, 1945 at the age of 21, he was killed in action on the second day of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Everyone in the family loved Charles, and his death was a great loss to the family.
