Birth: Feb. 19, 1959
Death: Oct. 23, 2006

Memorial services for Steven Duane Barnette, 47, of Syracuse, New York, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at St. Philip's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Sam Boyd officiating.

Mr. Barnette died Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, in Syracuse, New York. He was born Feb. 19, 1959, in Houston, Texas to William E. (Bill) Barnette and Maxine Gouras Barnette.

Mr. Barnette was baptized and confirmed at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas where he served as an acolyte and sang in the choir. In recent years, he reaffirmed his Christian faith and his baptismal vows at Christ Church in Winchester, Virginia where he was a member and sang in the choir there also.

Being gifted with a beautiful singing voice and also as an instrumentalist, Mr. Barnette was a member of the Singing Boys of Houston and also sang in several other choirs. He played the French Horn for five years in school bands.

He was a Certified Telecommunications Technician and while employed was required to travel to several states, and was on a job assignment across the bay from New York City on 9/11.

Mr. Barnette also was gifted and excelled in the culinary arts. One of his greatest delights was preparing and serving delicious meals to family and friends.

He was compassionate and was responsive to the need of others, and encouraged friends and family to be charitable to those less fortunate. It has been said by a friend that Steve taught unknowingly and others learned from him that everyone's voice counted in this troubled world. Steve possessed an infinite charm of touching strangers in need with words of encouragement and support when others would turn away. He gave of himself, more than anyone could ever know and more than he will ever be credited. Steve encouraged his friend to seek out his own spiritual needs by praying for himself as much as for others. He walked his own path, but he always walked with God, even at the lowest points in his life when most others would have been discouraged and given up.

Mr. Barnette is survived by his parents, Bill and Maxine Barnette of Palestine; sister, Laurie Huntsinger and husband Fred of Spring; brother, Doug Barnette and his wife Roberta of Round Rock; sister, Karen Evans and husband Ned of Houston; Aunt Jean Gibson of Oakhurst, California; Uncle Nick Gouras and wife Sharon of Palestine; several nieces and nephews, great nephews and great nieces and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association, which held a special place in Mr. Barnette's heart as his sister Karen was a juvenile diabetic; or to the St. Philip's Discretionary Fund.
