When just a lad of nine years old, Amos witnessed the Battle of Concord during the Revolution. His father moved to Chester, Vt. after the conflict. Amos was honored with the important town offices of town clerk, assistant judge of Windsor County, sheriff, justice, and served as a member of the State Legislature in 1817. He was elected Colonel of the State Militia. He built an elegant brick mansion near his father's house in 1830, still occupied in 2008.

Amos was married twice: his first wife was Anna Duncan (c1779-1801), Lydia Edwards was his second.

Obituary:
In Chester Vt., March 5th, [1849] Col. Amos Heald, 82
This event has deprived the Church of one of its brightest ornaments, and this community of one of its most cherished citizens. He lived and died on the same farm on which his father built a log cabin 72 years ago; whither he removed from Concord, Mass.
Mr. Heald held commission, either civil or military, under the authority of the State of Vermont, 57 years, and under every Governor who has presided since the State was first organized, of whom there have seventeen. He has held the office of Town Clerk 24 years; and at his decease, was the eldest Justice, it is believed, in commission in the State; he has been Clerk of School District, No. 3, from its organization – 57 years. And the punctuality with which he discharged duty, may be seen at a glance in the fact that during the 57 years, he was absent from but one school meeting. Besides filling a variety of Town, County, and State offices with distinguished credit to himself and utility to the public, he has been Deacon in the Congregational Church 24 years. His father held that office in the same Church before him 14 years. And the language of Inspiration is beautifully applicable to them: "For they that have used the office of deacon well, purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus." [1 Timothy 3:13]
