Earl was the third child and only son of Robert Bruce and Sarah Hattie Adams Brown of Johnson County, Tennessee. He had two older sisters, Virginia and Evelyn. He served in the US Navy during World War II, participating in D-Day, piloting landing craft. He married Alice Wagner, also of Johnson County, Tennessee in 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland, and they celebrated 60 years of marriage before Alice passed away in 2008. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Honey Creek Country Club. He was also a general aviation pilot. Earl and Alice had one daughter, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Earl is a proven descendant of Mayflower passenger Stephen Hopkins through Stephen's daughter, Constance Hopkins Snow.
