He was promoted to Major on February 14, 1863 and to Lieutenant Colonel on July 7, 1863. He led his regiment through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out at Vicksburg, Mississippi on August 7, 1865. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the siege of Vicksburg, Miss., and especially at the battle of Franklin, Tenn.".
