Wayne L. Cox, 70, lost his courageous fight with cancer on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at the G.V. Sonny Montgomery VA Hospital.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be scheduled at a later date.
Mr. Cox was the son of the late Cecil Cox and the late Thelma Dye Cox. He was a native of West Virginia and has lived in Walnut Grove for the past nine years. He served in the U.S. Army and was in the 155 Howitzer Division in Germany. Mr. Cox retired from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL and spent an additional 25 years in the Glass and Glazing Industry. He loved to drive and has driven for Greyhound and the County School Board. "He would drive anything and loved every minute" said his wife Peggy. Together, they were members of Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
Mr. Cox is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Peggy J. Cox of Walnut Grove; daughter, Joann Vickers and husband, Steve of West Virginia; son, William L. Neal and wife, Traci of Walnut Grove; two granddaughters, Molly and Stephanie; sisters, Phyllis Schmunk and Jean Crisp; brothers, Franklin Cox and Steve Cox; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the care given by the hospital staff at the Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
