Mrs. Sherry Dawn Gross, 63, of Elizabethtown, died peacefully at home at 1 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, surrounded by her family.

Sherry was a native of Hardin County. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where she served in various capacities and also was a choir member.

Sherry was an independent insurance agent, and for the last 32 years, she and her brother, Steve Rutherford, owned the Rutherford Insurance Agency Inc. in Elizabethtown.

Sherry served as a trustee for the SouthEastern Illinois Electric Cooperative for the past 13 years, and was presently serving as board secretary.

Sherry graduated from Cave-In-Rock High School with the class of 1962, and she attended Southeastern Illinois College, where she earned an associate's degree. She formerly served as the village clerk of Elizabethtown, and was Fluorspar Pageant coach for 10 years.

A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt, she is survived by her husband of 40 years, Gary Gross; her sons, Garrison Gross of Marion and Gannon Gross of rural Cave-In-Rock; and granddaughter, Victoria Gross of rural Cave-In-Rock; brother, Steve (Kim) Rutherford of Elizabethtown; and her grandmother, Vena Denton of Rosiclare.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Don Rutherford and Betty Jean Williams Rutherford.

A Memorial Mass celebrating her life was held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 4, 2009 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Elizabethtown, with a family friend, Fr. Larry Anschutz, celebrant, and Fr. Ignatius Okonkwo, co-celebrant. A reception followed in the church hall. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hardin County General Hospital, 6 Ferrel Road, P.O. Box 2467, Rosiclare Ill. 62982; St. Joseph Catholic Church, R.R. 1 Box 140, Elizabethtown, Ill. 62931; Southern Illinois Hospice, 204 Halfway Road, Marion Ill. 62959-5058; the American Cancer Society, 4503 W.
